Wallsend FC go top of the table!

Wallsend FC notched their ninth consecutive win yesterday againsts Cooks Hill at the Newcastle Athletics Centre. The 3-2 victory lifted them to top spot on the NNSW NewFM 1st Division ladder!

A fast start saw Wallsend lead 3-0 after 15 minutes. Tega Marcus started the scoring after getting in behind the Cooks Hill defence and slotting past the keeper. The second goal came from a Chris Gazzard long throw that got a faint touch from a Cooks Hill defender on the goal line. Mitchell Cook then scored with a sublime side footed volley from just inside the 18yard area.

To the credit of Cooks hill, they did not lay down and hit back just before half time. Their left winger ran onto a long ball from the back to slot under Wallsend keeper Rob James. Half time score, 3-1.

Cooks Hill continued to apply pressure in the second half but could not fashion any clear chances. Wallsend instead had the better chances to go 4-1 ahead. Tega Marcus nearly capped a brilliant individual run with a goal, but could only lift the ball over the cross bar from 8 yards. David Hodgson also had a clear site of goal from a Chris Gazzard corner but he too could only head over.

Wallsend were nearly made to pay for their missed chances late in the game when Cooks Hill scored the second goal and pressed strongly for the equaliser. They couldn’t however beat a desperate Wallsend defence, epitomised by a Trent Milton goal line clearance in stoppage time, who held on for the win and 3pts.

Other results on the day saw our U23’s grab a great late win 1-0. Our U19’s grabbed a 1-1 draw and our U17’s went down 1-0.
