Wallsend 6 def. Thornton 0

SUNDAY 10 MARCH, 2.30PM, THE GARDENS

Hot conditions proved a recurring theme for all teams in round one, however, Wallsend made the most of their chances winning 6-nil to Thornton Redbacks.

It was a big day for Wallsend Club Captain Sophie Phillips, which saw her celebrate 100 senior games for the club.

Head coach for Wallsend, Brad Jones, said he was proud of his squads’ efforts in yesterday’s trying conditions.

“It was pretty hot and tiring conditions. Whilst we’re not the finished product yet, the girls played really well and I was really happy with them,” Jones said.

“I actually think it was a really good team performance. There wasn’t really one player that stood out, they actually gelled and played some good football at times.

“It was just a solid team performance.”

Despite the disappointing scoreline, Thornton head coach Alan Primmer says he was happy with his side’s performance and said they know what they need to improve on to build in the coming weeks.

“They [Wallsend] were definitely the better team but as I said to my girls, I was very happy at halftime. A very well taken free-kick for their [Wallsend] first one and a penalty… that was it 2-nil. But we were in the game and we played some good footy and the girls were happy at halftime,” Primmer said.

“Kirstie Power-Walford who was only 16, Jasmyn Hughes who was only 16 and Lauren Faulkner who’s only 17, they all kick-off in our 14’s four years ago and now they’re playing first grade, so that’s basically a representation of our club.

“They all played really, really well. Probably a special mention to Anais Moore the captain.

“I thought she really stood-up in the second half and things really could have gotten uglier, but she let the Wallsend girls know we weren’t going to layover and I think the girls really lifted with that.”

Herald Women’s Premier League Round 21 Review

South Wallsend 3 (Gema Simon, Alesha Clifford, Beth Kermode) drew Wallsend 3 (Libby Copus-Brown 2, Jess Evans) at Walker Fields on Sunday. Half-time: South Wallsend led 2-1.

There was no sign of a dead rubber at Walker Fields, with Wallsend hoping to finish their season on a high and South Wallsend wanting a clinical performance before finals.

Both teams battled but couldn’t be separated, forcing them to share the points in a six-goal thriller.

The game had barely started when a neatly placed cross into the box found Gema Simon who tapped it into the bottom right corner for an early lead.

The Wolves doubled their lead shortly after, with a scramble in the box finding Alesha Clifford just off the back post who booted it into the top left corner.

Wallsend came back within a goal when Georgia Little played a nice through ball to Libby Copus-Brown who had a solo effort and brought the keeper off her line before slotting it in behind her.

The goals continued to come in the second half and the Devil’s found an equaliser when Laura Hall was felled in the box and Copus-Brown was successful with a penalty from the spot.

The hosts stole the lead for the second time when Beth Kermode’s shot from the top of the 18-yard box sailed past the keeper and into the top right corner.

But yet again, Wallsend levelled when Jess Evans scored from a header to ensure her side got a share of the points.

Wallsend coach Marc Hingston said it was a great feeling to walk away with a share of the points.

“The ground was like concrete so for us to play a good brand of football, I was really proud of the girls and that’s a credit to them,” Hingston said.

“We knew we were still in the game at half-time and we came out strong in the second half which was great to see.

“As a team, we set ourselves a goal to not get beaten by them all year because they have been a side we know we can compete against and to be honest, we probably did enough to win the game.

“It’s only six months until the season starts again so it gives the girls some confidence. The goal for next season will be to have more luck with a consistent starting side and adding in a few extra key players will make a big difference for us.”

Match of the Round

South Wallsend v Wallsend

Sunday 5th August, 2:30 pm

Walker Fields

Last start: South Wallsend beat Adamstown 2-1, Wallsend lost 4-0 to Warners Bay.

Position on ladder: South Wallsend 4th, 13 points; Wallsend 6th, 8 points.

Squad news

Wallsend will field their strongest starting side all season with playmaker Laura Hall set to return.

What the coaches say

Wallsend coach Marc Hingston said to finish the season with a win would be icing on the cake.

“We are pretty excited for this game because we really want to finish the season on a high,” Hingston said.

“After the first six weeks of competition, we were eyeing off a top two spot and playing really well but then we lost a few key players and had some injuries which made it difficult to stay consistent.

“When you can’t get the same consistent squad on paper each week, it makes it very hard to be successful but we have still managed to compete every single week and I think we have done well.

“We beat them the first time and then had a draw the second time so we know we are capable of getting the job done and winning would be a great way to finish our season.

“We haven’t got the depth that other clubs do which has made it hard but it would be great to get three points on Sunday.”

Bottom line

For the third time this season, South Wallsend take on Wallsend in a local derby that should see the best from both sides on display. Wallsend has only won twice this season, with one of those occasions being a 3-2 victory at Walker Fields. Consistency has been a hurdle both teams have struggled to overcome which may be the deciding factor. Who can step up in a match that means plenty for both clubs?

Match of the Round

Warners Bay 7 (Jenna Kingsley 4, Cass Davis 2, Sophie Stapleford 1) defeated Wallsend 1 (Libby Copus-Brown) at John Street Oval on Sunday.

Half-time: Warners Bay led 3-0.

Player-coach Cassidy Davis credited “being clinical in front of goal” for putting Wallsend to the sword and moving five points clear at the top of the ladder.

The hosts drew first blood when Jenna Kingsley scored twice to give the Bay an early lead.

This time, Kingsley turned provider, putting through a pass to Davis who slotted it into the bottom right corner.

Warners Bay struck early in the second half through Sophie Stapleford but a Libby Copus-Brown free kick put Wallsend back in the game.

The hosts sealed the deal with Kingsley finishing her four-goal haul and Davis grabbing her second in the dying stages of the game.

Davis thought her sides solid defence played a big part in their seven-goal blitz.

“We are glad to get the three points and I’m proud of the girl’s effort,” Davis said.

“Wallsend battled and fought hard which we spoke about at half-time and definitely improved in the second half.

“Credit to all of the girls today as we worked hard as a team to secure important points.”

Wallsend coach Marc Hingston said it was “a good game” and “we competed all day”.

Match of the Round
Warners Bay v Wallsend
Sunday 27th May, 2:30 pm
John Street Oval

Last start: Warners Bay beat Thornton 9-0, Wallsend lost 2-0 to Adamstown

Position on ladder: Warners Bay 1st, 25 points; Wallsend 4th, 13 points

Squad news
Nadja Squires and Maddi Latter return for Warners Bay to field a full-strength team. Sass Seaborn has moved to South Wallsend and Laura Hall, Georgia Minors and Rosie O’Connor will be given until Friday to prove their match fitness.

What the coaches say
Warners Bay player-coach Cass Davis wants to finish off Round two strong.

“Last time we played Wallsend, they threw everything at us,” Davis said.

“We lacked intensity which we have spoken about and did really well on Sunday.

“We know Wallsend will come out firing so we need to be ready from the start.”

Wallsend coach Marc Hingston says he is expecting another great game of football.

“We have a few injuries at the moment but we have plenty of depth and culture that money can’t buy,” Hingston said.

“We are quietly confident we can be successful on Sunday but also appreciate that Warners Bay are playing well.”

Bottom line
History hasn’t been kind to Wallsend, with their last victory over Warners Bay back in Round 9, 2015. Sass Seaborn is a big loss for the Devil’s but their young guns will have no trouble filling the void. The visitors have the chance to extend their top four lead and will be out with a point to prove. On the opposing side, Warners Bay have the front-runner for the Golden Boot, Jenna Kingsley, leading the charge up front. Kingsley is dangerous and with Tara Pender and Sophie Stapleford assisting, they are a force to be reckoned with. The Bay is coming off a big win over Thornton and will be looking for another scalp on Sunday. A victory is a big ask for Wallsend but they can beat any team on their day which makes for an exciting match.

Adamstown 2 (Lauren Allan, Elodie Dagg) defeated Wallsend 0 at The Gardens on Sunday.

Half-time: Adamstown led 2-0.

Adamstown scored the bragging rights this time with their third win of the season, defeating a disappointed Wallsend side 2-0.

Wallsend had a tough time with injuries, losing Laura Hall, Georgia Minors and Jess Evans before full time.

Returning strike weapon Lauren Allan wasted no time finding the back of the net, scoring in the 38th minute and creating plenty of headaches for Wallsend’s defence.

Four minutes later, Elodie Dagg capitalised on a mistake from Devil’s defender Brooke Summers and struck from the top of the 18-yard box to score.

In the second half, it was to and fro with both sides having chances but unable to execute.

Adamstown’s usual brick wall defence was exceptional and fill in goalkeeper Natalie Wiseman put in a superb performance to earn Buds player of the match.

Adamstown coach Paul Devitis said the overall work ethic of his side was near perfect.

“Our defence was probably the biggest winning factor,” Devitis said.

“We didn’t give them a sniff of creating anything in the second half and our defence was compact.

“We managed to create many ‘two on one’ defensive tackles and it was the first time we have put in a 90 minute performance.”

“The girls have played some great football and have battled so hard for no reward, but today they earned their reward.”

Wallsend coach Marc Hingston described the match as “one of those days where nothing went right.”

“We had a lot of positional changes due to injuries which meant a below-par performance,” Hingston said.

“Credit to Adamstown who were more desperate but we’ve put a line through today and moved on.”

U20’s, 17’s, 14’s Results:

20s: Wallsend 3 beat Adamstown 2.

17s: Wallsend 5 beat Adamstown 2.

14s: Wallsend 2 drew Adamstown 2.

Adamstown v Wallsend

Sunday 20th May, 2:30 pm

The Gardens

Last start: Adamstown lost 4-2 to Warners Bay, Wallsend lost 3-0 to Merewether

Position on ladder: Wallsend 4th, 13 points; Adamstown 6th, 7 points

Squad news

Adamstown has been dealt a cruel blow with keeper Olivia Sneddon out for the next 4-6 weeks due to a tear in her PCL. U20’s keeper Natalie Wiseman will join first grade and strike weapon Lauren Allan returns from the United States. There are no changes to Wallsend.

What the coaches say

Adamstown coach Paul Devitis is hoping there will be more effort from his side on Sunday.

“We will be looking to put in a strong performance and get a positive result,” Devitis said.

“Both clubs try to play a good brand of football so it should be a good spectacle.

“This weekend’s game against Wallsend is huge for us and the girls are up for the challenge.”

Wallsend coach Marc Hingston says he has been impressed with the standard of football his side has shown in the last two weeks.

“We have spent time with our attacking players this week to work on technique in front of goal,” Hingston said.

“The girls were hitting the target constantly and their confidence is starting to grow.

“Our stat of 46 shots in two games for four goals doesn’t read well but it says a lot about creating so many chances.

“Hopefully with a focus on finishing this week we can get a reward for playing well.”

Bottom line

Wallsend escaped with bragging rights over Adamstown back in Round four but it may not be smooth sailing this weekend. Adamstown has had terrible luck with injuries so far and the loss of Olivia Sneddon will hurt their defence massively. There is nobody more capable of filling the void than Natalie Wiseman and excitement is building for her performance on Sunday. The welcomed return of Lauren Allan from America is a huge bonus for the side as she scored 16 goals in eight matches last season for the Buds. Wallsend boasts quality across the park and has shown in the past they have the ability to compete with the best. It’s an exciting matchup that could go either way and executing opportunities will be the deciding factor.

Match of the Round
Merewether 3 (Rhali Dobson 2, Jamee Ellis) defeated Wallsend 0 at Wallsend Park on Sunday. Half-time: Merewether led 2-0.

There was no shortage of action at Wallsend Park as Merewether continued their winning streak with a grinding 3-0 win over Wallsend on Sunday afternoon.

It didn’t take long for the visitors to get on the board with Jamee Ellis scoring from an absolute thunderbolt free-kick in the 16th minute.

Merewether shot-stopper Alison Logue had potentially her best game of the season and even managed an assist after Rhali Dobson ran onto her full field goal kick and chipped Devil’s keeper Danielle Redding to score just before half-time.

Wallsend’s failure to score wasn’t from a lack of trying with Libby Copus-Brown and Sass Seaborn both unlucky not to put one in the back of the net.

The visitors were able to put the game to bed in the dying stages of the game after Rhali Dobson drew the keeper out and slotted one in behind her.

Wallsend coach Marc Hingston said it was one of his side’s best performances all year.

“We had 19 shots on target and played a standard of football so high that any coach would be proud,” Hingston said.

“Our effort was enormous and we dominated for the most part but conceded three goals against the run of play.

“It was heartbreaking to watch as we deserved more but our football and effort was outstanding.”

Merewether coach Cass Koppen thought her side played below their capability.

“We didn’t concede and we battled hard to grind out the win,” Koppen said.

“There has been an inconsistency with player availability this season which has been difficult.

“We faced a much stronger Wallsend side than in Round one and full credit to them.”
